Since the end of the Cold War, borders have never seemed as present to us in Europe as they were perceived during the period of the Corona pandemic. Since then, we have been confronted with a dystopian scenario for the future that potentiates not only political, but also social and societal boundaries.

The two-day summer video art screening "We after 1989" brings together video works by German and Korean artists about their reunited and still divided country. Since last year, the artists have been exchanging ideas on artistic strategies of division and reunification at network meetings. As an intermediate stage of this dialogue, Keum Art Projects is organizing the Summer Video Art Screening on September 5th and 6th from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. directly in the artists' garden "Das Dritte Land" on Matthäikirchplatz of the Berlin Kulturforum.

The artists play with pairs of concepts such as visible and invisible border, new order and conflict, reality and fictionality. They speak of the drawing of borders under social, biological and political aspects as well as the possibilities of experiencing nature in border areas.

In their artistic diversity, the videos on both evenings offer a unique exchange of perspectives on the present in Germany and Korea: the program captures immediate experiences of social upheaval and related sensitivities in both countries.

The Summer Screening Evening was made possible by the kind support of
Hans and Charlotte Krull Stiftung , Arts Council Korea and Stiftung St. Matthäus

We thank the Seoul Museum of Art for the kind loan.

About the location: "Das Dritte Land", the artist's garden of the two South Korean artists Han Seok Hyun and Kim Seung Hwoe serves as an open platform for artistic explorations of the real and imaginary spaces between nature and the border. In the work of the two artists, plants from North and South Korea have been growing together in the middle of Kulturforum since May 2019. With the question of how artistic reflection on nature in border areas can influence social consciousness, "Das Dritte Land" has been organizing a series of performances since 2019. As a growing, processual art in public urban space, the garden has developed into a stage on which artists deal with the themes of border/defense, nature/environment, utopia/dystopia in a performative way.
