Legend of the Dragon, Street Art project, Deepwater Bay Beach _ Hong Kong 2015.jpg

Legend of the Dragon (Street Art project, Deepwater Bay Beach – Hong Kong), Phil Akashi, 2015

Chinese characters “龍的傳人“ imprinted hundreds of times. Chinese consider the dragon their ancestor and proudly proclaim themselves: descendants of the dragon. “Legend of Dragon”, which is the first of 9 chapters of ‘Street Art Project’, is seen on Deepwater Bay Beach Street in Hong Kong. This is a work of Phil Akashi(1978-), who is looking for his own languages working with Chinese characters’ seals.

In China, dragon symbolized power and fortune as a mythical creature. The legend of the dragon has played a significant role in China’s rich history and culture. Also in Korea, dragon was a symbol of a powerful King as we can see it on clothes of the Joseon Dynasty’s kings. However in western cultures, dragon was a scary and malicious monster. Meanwhile, Phil Akashi wanted to express the dragon as a spiritual symbol of the Chinese unity and pride for the country.

Phil is one of Westerners. But he is the artist who falls in love with Asian cultures, especially Chinese culture. Currently, people pay attention to Asian art, especially, Chinese art. At this moment, the interesting artist, Phil Akashi in Hong Kong, a passionate city of Asia makes us have lots of curiosity and questions; why he came to China and what in China attracted him.

Phil Akashi is a Belgian-born Hong Kong based artist. As a nomadic artist, he later lived in Los Angeles, Madrid, Wellington (New Zealand) then Shanghai where he enjoyed stimulating artistic environments and further deepened his interest in Asian cultures. He lives and works in Hong Kong. Currently, He is in Shanghai for “The Swatch Art Peace Hotel Artist Residency”.

He moved to Asia 5 years ago to escape his comfort zone and change environment. At that time Europe was in “decline” and the global atmosphere was rather pessimistic. He thought it was the right timing to discover Asia. Although he planned to stay 6 months initially, he has stayed for more than 5 years. He really considers Asia as a stimulating artistic environment and enjoys every day to further deepen his interest in Asian cultures. He says that the dynamism in China makes everything seem possible.

It’s difficult and limitative to make generalities about the West and Asia today as they are very complex, diverse and fast changing elements. At first sight, he would say the history, the culture, the concept, and the modes of expression are different. The aesthetic component used to dominate in the East while the theoretic was dominating in the West. But he thinks it appears there are more and more interactions between Eastern and Western Art. “Also many aspects of each style and culture art now seen in works from both the East and the West”, he said.

He has always been fascinated by the strength and the aesthetic of the Asian characters. He works with a broad range of media by using the traditional Asian seals. His arts practice involves using the power of language with a transcultural and conceptual approach to question the contemporary world around him. He is trying to forge his own artistic language that links East and West and places the past in the service of the present. Through the Swatch Art Peace Hotel Artist Residency in Shanghai for 6 months period, he will try to integrate words and poems from Japan and Korea including installation and sculptures.

To him, the street practice seems like one way not only to escape the studio for a lot of freedom and diversity, but to express himself. Choosing the place which would bring him a special emotion and be a bit funky or unique, he makes his own spot creating his own 'carte blanche' commissioned project with a sense of 'respect' and meaningful aesthetics. In this street art process, he said, “the content and the message of symbols are key, but the choice of the location is important, too.”

His ultimate goals are to express himself, to bring questions and emotions, and to share his passion for Asian letters and seals. As a trace of his passage, he wants to immortalize into his work the influence of Hong Kong as a cultural, political, social environment.

His works prove that he is deeply in love with Chinese culture dynamic and breaking the boundary between west and east. This nomadic artist, Phil Akashi’s passion makes us curios about his next work, especially, a work integrated Korean words with poems.
