Members of the Up-Helly-Aa Jarl squad line up for a drink outside the Royal British Legion club en route through Lerwick during the start of the festival on the Shetland Islands, January 31, 2006. The Up-Helly-Aa festival, introduced by men returning from the Napoleonic Wars of the early 19th century, takes place annually on the last Tuesday of January. The climax of the day comes with the participants dressed in viking costumes and flame bearing torches, dragging a Viking galley through the streets of Lerwick to a designated point where it will be ceremonially burnt.
